Vortex Coalition

The Vortex Coalition, commonly referred to as VoCo, was a large faction on 2b2t. Founded in May 2015 by Coltsnid and AmericanOreo, it holds the record the longest running faction on the server. The group was disbanded on March 10th, 2021.

With a consistent member count of 150+ during its existence, The Vortex Coalition was the largest faction on 2b2t, as well as the largest among prominent anarchy Minecraft servers as a whole. The group maintained this number while removing inactive members and subjecting applicants through rigorous vetting.

The Vortex Coalition is known to have owned one of the most populated 2b2t-related Discord servers, with up to 3800 members. VoCo had its own economy which is based on its own currency: VoCoin™️, where players could buy rank-ups, in-game items, or priority queue, paid clients as well as numerous miscellaneous items.

The group's motto was "The Vortex Coalition is an elite group of players dedicated to making 2b2t a better place".

History

Prologue

Coltsnid, the eventual founder of The Vortex Coalition, joined 2b2t on August 17th, 2014. As with many other players at the time, Colts spent his first few months primarily exploring the spawn regions, whilst gathering items and dying of hunger. He would sometimes invite several of his friends to play on the server with him.

Eventually, in December 2014, Coltsnid was joined up by AmericanOreo – a real-life friend of Colts for 7 years. The two founded a small base 100,000 blocks out from spawn, which would later become the Phase I VoCo HQ.

Phase I

Establishment

In May 2015, Sato86 and the rest of Valkyria had amassed their members at spawn in preparation for the Third Incursion, unbeknownst to Colts and Oreo. The two were on a trip from spawn back to their base, when they encountered a player named FuzzyFutureFox in the nether. Initially, the two befriended the player, but Oreo later killed him for his items. It was soon revealed, through angry chat messages praising Valkyria and the Incursion, that FuzzyFutureFox was a participant in the Third Incursion. Within 15 minutes of Fuzzy’s death, Sato86 appeared in god gear and quickly killed Colts and Oreo.

This series of events led to Coltsnid creating a group intended for the mocking, memeing and satirizing of Valkyria as an act of revenge against Sato. The Vortex Coalition was officially founded by Coltsnid and AmericanOreo in May 2015. A logo was designed by Colts which resembles the spiral of a vortex.

Activities

Efforts to harass Valkyria began with VoCo's infamous "Did you know?" Spambot. The spambots, which originally ran on the accounts InvisibleGecko18 and DeadlyMause, would frequently post satirical, over-the-top messages that were designed to annoy Sato and other members of Valkyria, and would later become the source of 2b2t’s “Did you know?” meme, such as:

">Did you know? The Vortex Coalition is currently occupying and renovating Spawn."

">Did you know? The Vortex Coalition single-handedly carved out all of the Nether highways."

The spambots were proven to be effective, as Sato’s annoyance at these messages sparked the VoCo/Sato rivalry, one of the oldest rivalries on the server, and would often be memed in the following years. The nickname "VoCo" came to exist through constant arguments in the 2b2t chat about the group, with the term being coined by someone as saying very negative things.

Over the following months, membership in VoCo rose, reaching a peak of 25 members. With 2b2t only averaging around 40 active players in the later half of 2015, The Vortex Coalition represented a relatively large portion of the playerbase at the time.

Phase II

Activities in The Vortex Coalition decreased during the first half of 2016, with the group suffering a loss of members and relevance amidst the backdoor drama of early 2016. However, there was an increase in activities within the group just before June 2016, when TheCampingRusher joined the server and subsequently brought hundreds of players to 2b2t. The influx of new players wishing to leave their marks on 2b2t, as well as VoCo’s policy of accepting applicants regardless of their social classes, allowed The Vortex Coalition to recruit significantly more members than they have ever had before.

The Vortex Coalition worked to expand its reach by advertising through memes on /r/2b2t and /r/TheVortexCoalition, as well as actively uploading to their YouTube channel. These advertising campaigns proved to be a success, and allowed the VoCo community to expand very rapidly.

Notable Activities

Lag Machine
Sengorn_Leopard's Lag Machine

Sengorn_Leopard's Lag Machine

In September 2016, Sengorn_Leopard built one of the server’s largest lag machines at the time. The machine had the capability to bring the server down below 2 TPS, rendering it largely unplayable. At the time, the lag machine saw largely positive receptions from the community, as it prevented TheCampingRusher and other YouTubers from making videos, and contributed to their eventual departure from the server. Sengorn_Leopard was later granted the Executive role within VoCo as a reward for his efforts. Sengorn’s new position also allowed VoCo to solidify the group’s control over the lag machine.

The coordinates of this lag machine were later leaked by Coltsnid, in retaliation for Sengorn_Leopard betraying the Coalition during the disciple/religion meme.

Wrath of VoCo

On November 24th, 2016, The Vortex Coalition finished construction of their take on the Wrath Outpost at 420/911, which took place overnight. Constructed with over 50,000 blocks of obsidian, it was one of the largest player-made structures near spawn at the time. However, it was destroyed within days of its creation due to the ongoing Fifth Incursion. The wrath was repaired soon after, then destroyed and repaired again, thus creating a cycle that continued into 2017 and 2018.

VoCo Reddit Incursion
The Wrath of VoCo (2016)

The Wrath of VoCo (2016)

In December 2016, as part of The Vortex Coalition’s advertising campaign, VoCo memes were being actively posted on the 2b2t subreddit, by both members and non-members. For a period of 4 days, the subreddit’s front page was covered by VoCo-related memes and posts, which saw mixed opinions directed towards the group. This event marked the peak of VoCo’s popularity among 2b2t players at the time. Eventually, the Reddit Incursion was intervened by the subreddit’s admin, who carried out a large banwave of many meme posters, and later introduced a new rule forbidding spam and low-quality posts. The new rule would also be the start of a major form of censorship that is currently present on the 2b2t subreddit.

The end of Phase II

Towards the end of the phase, as a joke, Coltsnid began to call himself a god, and VoCo members that accepted him as their Lord and savior were accepted into his group of disciples. However, some members did not get the joke and felt unhappy about it, sparking controversies. Around this time, one of the group's executives, HermeticLock, who was responsible for running the website, decided to change the home page to a meme displaying the DonFuer logo, which while was later clarified as a joke, the change ended up further escalating the tensions within the group. Amidst the drama, on January 13th, 2017, executive member Sengorn_Leopard banned all users from the VoCo Discord server. When Coltsnid became aware of this, he deleted the discord server and posted an "official" disbandment statement on /r/2b2t, although the post was later edited to a link of the new VoCo Discord server.

After circulating several memes such as “VoCo II”, Coltsnid went into a period of hiatus, leaving AmericanOreo to administer The Vortex Coalition, as the group entered its off-season period.

Phase III

Project Shiny's Gold Farm

Project Shiny's Gold Farm

On June 2nd, 2017, The Vortex Coalition ended its off-season period and began recruiting new members. 4 days later, ownership of the group was transferred back to Coltsnid, who returned from hiatus on the same day. Salamander, joe/ovnel, CyanLime and househousehouse1 remained executive members.

With the view to establishing a more professional and structured group, as well as reinstating activities, new systems and protocols were introduced. This includes a more streamlined application-based recruitment system, as well as a new semi-automated ranking system, which determines the rank of a member based on their activities within the server. These additions worked to great effect, as VoCo ended Phase III with over 110 active members, as well as finishing construction of 11 separate group bases, including 2 major bases. Numerous 420/911 repairs were carried out, which allowed the wrath to remain in good conditions throughout the phase.

On September 28th, 2017, The Vortex Coalition expanded onto the me_irlcraft server as a side project/recruitment scheme outside of 2b2t. This expansion proved hugely successful, with The Vortex Coalition receiving over 50 applications from the playerbase, as well as completely dominating all other forces on the server. me_irlcraft closed down on November 22nd, 2017. At the start of November 2017, The Vortex Coalition began experimenting with the Prime Minister role – a position representing an elected official from the lower-ranked members of the group, with each term lasting one to two weeks. 8 elections were held and completed, with 6 different members winning the position (HouseCasterly and HermeticLock winning twice). The Prime Minister program was met with mixed receptions, with many members finding Prime Ministers helpful for the activities of the group, while others finding the position and elections as memeing opportunities.

Throughout the phase, VoCo had been heavily investing in spawn operations, such as public infrastructure, spawn bases for new players, and public builds. Several spawn projects were completed during the phase, most notably Project Shiny – a large gold farm constructed within 5,000 blocks of spawn. However, in mid-December, reports began to circulate that members of The Vortex Coalition had been griefing public infrastructure, notably the Southern Canal. To push back against this destructive behavior within the group, Coltsnid refined the VoCo Terms & Conditions to prohibit public builds from being targeted by group members. These commitments were further substantiated when on December 28th, 2017, The Vortex Coalition announced that it would be taking over executive operations of the Spawn Infrastructure Group (SIG), to help provide VoCo with resources to further mobilize spawn efforts and to efficiently produce reliable roads, bridges, and outposts for all spawn travelers.

Introduction of VoCoin™️

On December 13th, 2017, The Vortex Coalition launched its advanced cryptocurrency, VoCoin™️, the first of its kind on 2b2t. The currency revolutionized trading within VoCo, created incentives for in-game activities for its members, and would later become the backbone of VoCo as a whole. A list of jobs was created, which includes various tasks members can do to earn VoCoin™️. Ranks within The Vortex Coalition from Member to Exalted were made to be acquired via VoCoin™️, and as a result, the General Ranking System became fully automatic.

Within weeks of the launch, numerous item shops had begun accepting VoCoin™️. The currency allowed new players to gain access to various kits and items on the server without having to spend real-life money. VoCoin™️ also greatly promoted activities within The Vortex Coalition, and allowed the group to further expand its reach on the server.

End of Phase III

On January 30th, 2018, Coltsnid announced that Phase III of VoCo was coming to a close. In the statement, it was also announced that all VoCo staff members, including Executives and Trinity members, would be fired, and new staff would be chosen during the Off-Season and at the beginning of Phase IV, with the only exception being the Discord moderators:

"This was the most streamlined phase VoCo has ever had, and it yielded great success, not only for our Coalition but for 2b2t as a whole.

...It has been an honor working with you all throughout the past 7 months to take The Vortex Coalition to new heights, never seen before by any 2b2t group. Our reach is nearly endless when we work together. Our dominance on 2b2t is so unbreakable even I couldn't truly end VoCo, and that means something.

I will see you all in Phase IV!"

-Coltsnid, Phase III closure announcement.

Phase III Off-Season

Phase III’s Off-Season is considered the most active off-season in VoCo’s history. This period saw several major developments in The Vortex Coalition, including the establishment of an alliance with The Emperium, significant participation in the Sixth Incursion. Additionally, unlike previous off-seasons, recruitment levels and events remained consistent and active.

On April 12th, 2018, a new set of Executive members was announced:

  • joe/ovnel - Executive
  • HermeticLock - Executive
  • househousehouse1 - Executive
  • iZac – Executive

Phase IV

On June 15th, 2018, on the third anniversary of VoCo, Coltsnid announced the start of Phase IV. Following a purge, the group was sitting at just over 150 active members – the highest number since the height of the Rusher War.

The Vortex Coalition continued experimenting with the Prime Minister position at the start of the phase, with three elections being held, which were won by HouseCasterly, Ross, Ross (reelected), respectively. The position would soon be replaced by discrete staff roles such as Organizer, Duping Manager, etc. Several members were also promoted to the Management rank First Class™ during the phase, such as Erazael, Ringiohux, fowlup67, etc.
Wrath of VoCo's 2019 Rendition

Wrath of VoCo's 2019 Rendition

With the release of VoCoin™️ from Beta Testing and standardized jobs, activities within The Vortex Coalition reached an all-time high. Throughout the phase, numerous events were frequently held, most notably the repairing and defending of the Wrath of VoCo. Two new standardized kits, the VoKit™ 3.0 and VoKit™ 3.1 Unbreakable Edition, were mass-produced, and would later become two of the most prevalent kits on 2b2t and Constantiam.

Phase IV also saw VoCo’s expanding its activities onto Constantiam – a large 2b2t clone server. The group quickly became a major force on the server, having constructed numerous VoCo-themed sites in weeks, as well as staging several spawn takeovers and renovations throughout the phase.

On June 18th, 2018, The Vortex Coalition acquired the domain joinvo.co, which redirects to the Apply page on their website. According to statistics released by Coltsnid, this has dramatically increased the rate of new users joining the group. A new record of membership was set soon after, with the group reaching 242 registered members on July 17th, 2018. The VoCo Discord Server also greatly benefited from the domain name, reaching 600 members for the first time on July 3rd, 2018.

Phase IV ended on February 12th, 2019.

Phase V

The Fifth Phase of The Vortex Coalition commenced on June 15th, 2019. An event was held on 2b2t on the same day to commemorate the occasion, with over 100 VoCo symbols built and over 30 members present in the voice chat.

Many major additions were announced at the start of the event. These include a new role in the General Ranking System, Eternal. VoQueue – VoCo’s advanced proprietary queueskip service was also introduced, along with several new jobs and weekly challenges. The Vortex Coalition Server Network launched soon after, which featured PVP, Survival, etc. Several members also saw promotions and changes to their Management ranks, notably with iZac and Salamander becoming Senior Executives. Ringiohux, fowlup67, kekkekkek1, etc. also received promotions.
A 36x36x36 Vortex

A 36x36x36 Vortex

Following a successful start to the phase, the alliance with Emperium that lasted over a year abruptly ended, due to "immature members' lack of respect and failure to uphold the alliance". The ties were quickly cut, and Emperium members began killing and/or provoking VoCo members, thus intensifying a rivalry. Aggression towards Emperium escalated quickly, as VoCo started taking down multiple Emperium stashes and bases while exposing their wrongdoings. Emperium also increased hostilities towards VoCo, destroying several bases and attempting to turn VoCo members against the group.

Despite the initial drama, Phase V still went down as another successful and historic season of VoCo activity. The Vortex Coalition reached a new peak membership count of over 270 members in the summer. Two major VoCo-themed monuments were also constructed on 2b2t, including the Wrath of VoCo II, as well as a solid 36x36x36 Obsidian Vortex symbol – the largest possible vortex in Minecraft. The VoCoin™️ economy was also expanded, with the introduction of the VoMarket allowing for more versatility and spending opportunities.

Phase V ended on February 28th, 2020.

Phase VI

Phase VI began on June 15th, 2020, on the official commemoration date of the Vortex Coalition with a private event.

Multiple changes were implemented, with an overhaul of VoCo’s Base System and the introduction of the Media Team. A range of extracurricular activities was introduced during the phase, which gave more members opportunities to be active within VoCo, with the difficulty of joining 2b2t increasing overtime. These include VoHealth, VoComputer, Investing with VoCo, and most notably VoCo Game Night - a weekly, general gaming event, with a large portion of the VoCo membership participating in several events.
VoCo's Phase VI Monument

VoCo's Phase VI Monument

VoCoin™️ 2.0 was released during the phase, with many new innovative features, such as a public-facing API that enables community additions, as well as an improved codebase. The General Ranking System saw several changes, most notably the requirement of VoCo XP, a new collectible item that can only be earned via jobs and donations, for ranking up. Ascendant, a new rank in the system, was also introduced. The VoCo Credence System was also introduced for additional security measures at bases and events.

To further expand their reach among the anarchy Minecraft sector, The Vortex Coalition continued to expand its activities onto 9b9t. As with the expansion to Constantiam two years prior, VoCo was able to quickly dominate the server, finishing construction of its iconic 420/911 spawn base, as well as two 36x36x36 Vortex Symbols.

On September 3rd, 2020, The Vortex Coalition surpassed 7300 applications since 2015, further solidifying VoCo’s status as the most successful anarchy Minecraft group in history. On January 17th, 2021, The Vortex Coalition acquired the discord.gg/2b2t vanity URL, which helped the server surpass 3000 Discord members in the following days. The server lost access to the vanity link on March 7th, 2021.

Disbandment

On March 3rd, 2021, Senior Executive member iZac left the Vortex Coalition, prompting many high ranking members to leave due to unrest among the group. Numerous VoCo services came offline in the following 24 hours, such as VoQueue, VoCoin, the joinvo.co domain, etc.

On March 10th, 2021, Coltsnid posted a statement on the VoCo subreddit announcing that the group was being disbanded. In his statement, Coltsnid accused "an obsessed group of anarchy players" of stalking, harassing and working against him for years, and stated that he was shutting down VoCo as a "last resort". Shortly after, the Vortex Coalition Discord Server was deleted, along with their website, YouTube channel and the SIG Discord.

Bases

During its existence, The Vortex Coalition claimed to maintain around ~365 bases spanning out throughout the 2b2t map in all quadrants. The logistics of this number were up for debate, with Coltsnid claiming this number was an estimate, while others saw the number as a meme.

VoCo defined a base as "a relatively safe and controlled area outfitted with amenities including beds, ender chests, defensible fortifications, and renewable food sources". Many of these bases were small outposts that serve as "checkpoints" for members to set their bed and possibly farm/autofish. Some, on the other hand, were large, active bases that can have up to 15 members.

Relations

The Vortex Coalition was one the largest centralized 2b2t group ever assembled. However, it rarely establishes relations with other 2b2t factions, generally remaining very neutral towards most groups, unless antagonized. VoCo members were allowed to participate in other friendly 2b2t groups without issue.

Foreign Conflicts

Despite the neutral position among 2b2t factions, due to foreign aggravation, The Vortex Coalition has had numerous conflicts with other 2b2t factions. The most notable was the rivalry with Emperium, which derived from VoCo’s claim of Emperium members’ toxicity and immaturity, as well as their constant killing of VoCo members and disruption of VoCo activities. The two groups reached an alliance during the spring of 2018, known as VoPerium. However, this alliance eventually fell through.

The Vortex Coalition was also known to have directly eliminated, or played a major part in the disbandment of several enemy factions, most notably Team Malaria and Team Infrared. Other hostile groups were also created throughout the years, though they would quickly cease to exist without any response from The Vortex Coalition.

Additionally, throughout the years, many factions and players have attempted to employ The Vortex Coalition’s strategies of success to gain members, attention, and relevance on the server. These include creating in-game spambots, posting numerous memes on the 2b2t subreddit, and setting up structured group Discord servers with application processes, attainable ranks, and sometimes, a currency system. The Vortex Coalition generally did not concern themselves with these attempts, as they were usually applied without the precise understandings of VoCo’s method, and would ultimately fail after a short time.

Controversies

Throughout the years, The Vortex Coalition had been perceived as a somewhat controversial group on 2b2t. During the early years, these presumptions came from a minor section of players, most notably YellowstoneJoe, who disapproves of several VoCo activities on the server such as spambot usages, and showed immense annoyance at VoCo’s meme culture. Controversies were spurred up by rival factions with the intention of sabotaging VoCo, as well as from ex-members who are unhappy with their dismissal from The Vortex Coalition.

Trivia

  • The Vortex Coalition was responsible for the "Did you know?" meme due to the group's bot. There are over 150 original VoCoBot "Did you know?" messages.
  • The Vortex Coalition had its own queue skipping system, known as VoQueue.
  • The Vortex Coalition official motto was: "The Vortex Coalition is an elite group of players dedicated to making 2b2t a better place". However, this was a meme and was specifically designed to trigger those who are not fond of VoCo.
  • The Vortex Coalition had organized up to 20 members to be online at the same place all at once, they have had over 30 players logged into 2b2t at the same time.
  • Each VoCo base was named with a corresponding number since the first VoCo base. For example, VoCo Base 297 (Gamma Base) was the 297th base built by VoCo. Other examples include VoCo Base 276 (base raided by Tumorous) and VoCo base 329 (Delta Base).
